Equality Scheme

Mission Statement
The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington will provide a challenging, problem solving and ICT rich approach to learning which will encourage and support students and members of the local community in the full development of their intellectual, practical and interpersonal skills to enable them to contribute to an international and technological society.

Ø To achieve this we pledge to respect equal human rights of all our students and to educate them about equality
Ø We shall also respect the equal rights of our staff and other members of the community
Ø In particular we will comply with relevant legislation and frame and implement school policies and plans in relation to race and religious equality, disability equality and gender equality.

Responsibilities
The Governors are responsible for:
Ø making sure the school complies with relevant equality legislation and for
Ø ensuring that the school Equality Scheme and its procedures are followed;

The Head Teacher is responsible for
Ø making sure the race, disability and gender equality plans are readily available and that the governors, staff, students and their parents and guardians know about them;
Ø producing regular information for staff and governors about the plans and how they are working;
Ø making sure all staff know their responsibilities and receive training and support in carrying these out;
Ø taking appropriate action in cases of harassment and discrimination, including racist bullying, homophobic bullying and bullying related to gender or disability

All staff are responsible for:
Ø dealing with racist, homophobic and other hate incidents;
Ø being able to recognise and tackle bias and stereotyping;
Ø promoting equal opportunities and good race relations.
Ø Avoiding discrimination against anyone for reasons of ethnicity, disability or gender
Ø Keeping up to date with the law on discrimination;
Ø Taking up training and learning opportunities.

The Student Support Manager is responsible overall for dealing with reports of hate incidents where students are alleged to be the perpetrators
The Deputy Head teacher is responsible overall for dealing with reports of hate incidents where staff are alleged to be the perpetrators
All staff are responsible for reporting any such incident which comes to their attention to either the SSM or DH.
They must inform the Headteacher of any such allegations who is responsible for ensuring issues are followed up in a timely and effective way.

Visitors and contractors are responsible for:
Ø Knowing and following our Equality Scheme.
A copy of the Scheme is kept in Reception to ensure all visitors and contractors are aware of the scheme.
