The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington

Wilmington and Dartford Portal project

What is an e-portal? It sounds like something from a Harry Potter book – but this is wizardry of a different kind.

KCC, in conjunction with RM Learning, has been developing a new learning platform for schools. Leading on the pilot scheme, The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington together with Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, Dartford Grammar School and Dartford Grammar School for Girls have been working in collaboration on this exciting new project. The e-portal development will provide a consistent environment to enable teachers, students and parents to have a personalised view of ICT resources or information as appropriate and to access these resources remotely from home or school.

The launch of the Wilmington and Dartford Portal Project took place on Monday, 13 March 2006. It was hosted by the Grammar School for Girls Wilmington, as the lead school in the scheme. Maggie Bolton, Head Teacher, welcomed guests on behalf of the four schools and described how the schools have used their complementary specialisms: Maths and Computing, Engineering and Technology, Science and Modern Foreign Languages, to work together for the benefit of both students in the schools and for the staff in the specialist areas.

She said, “GSGW has been delighted to lead this e-portal pilot project. We can already see that the benefits and opportunities it creates for students and staff are considerable. We are looking forward to the next stage of live communications.

The Head Teachers of all four schools were present, together with the driving members of the Steering Group: Patricia Cronin, ICT Strategy Manager, GSGW; Mike Faulding, Director of ICT, WGSB; Julian Metcalf, Assistant Head DGS and Cath Wallis, Deputy Head, DGGS. Students were also in attendance to demonstrate the e-portal to the many guests, among them Dr Howard Stoate, MP; Alan Day, KCC E-Curriculum Development Manager and Graeme Dewart, MD of RM Learning.
