A-Level Psychology at GSGW

Psychology was first introduced at GSGW in 2003 and has since proven to be a highly popular Sixth Form subject. Psychology appeals to students for a number of key reasons:

Firstly, it inspires fascination since every human activity involves one or more aspects of Psychology. In recognition of this the AQA-A Psychology course, taken at GSGW, covers a diverse range of topics. These include Development of Attachments in Children, The Function of Sleep, Social Influence (Obedience and Conformity) and Explanations/Treatments of Psychological Disorders, such as schizophrenia.

Psychology is also popular for the critical and analytical skills it enables students to develop. The course requires them to examine a range of research evidence when considering the merits of different theories. Students are expected to research topics independently, give presentations and participate in class discussions. The development of these skills provides an excellent preparation for higher education courses.

In Year 13, students take on the role of a psychological researcher as part of their coursework. This involves recruiting participants, collecting/analysing data and writing up findings as part of a scientific research report. Many students consider this to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the course.

Because Psychology helps us to understand human behaviour and development, it is a useful qualification for those considering a career involving people. Examples include education, health, social work, banking, the media and human resource management. An increasing number of students from GSGW have chosen to continue their study of Psychology at university. For this, an A level qualification in the subject is an enormous advantage.
