The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington

Physical Education

Students are able to follow the AQA AS/A2 Physical Education syllabus at GSGW,this is run in conjunction with Wilmington Boy’s Grammar School.
In Year 12 students have the opportunity to follow the units below and gain an AS in the subject.

Unit 1 – 1 ½ hour paper at the end of Year 12

Physiological and Psychological Factors which Improve Performance.

Unit 2 – 1 ¼ hour paper at the end of Year 12

Socio-Cultural and Historical Effects on Participation in Physical Activity and their Influence on Performance.

Unit 3 - Coursework

Analysis and Improvement by Planning, Performing and Evaluating a training programme and Practical Demonstration OR Written Project Investigation


Students are advised on which avenue to take either the written project work in Year 12 or the Practical Demonstration if candidates can offer two sports at a competent level.

Students then have option to continue the subject to gain the full A level in Year 13 studying the following units:

Unit 4 – 1 ½ hour paper at the end of Year 13

Physiological, Biomechanical and Psychological Factors which Optimise Performance.

Unit 5 – 1 ½ hour paper at the end of Year 13

Factors Affecting the Nature and Development of Elite Performance and Synoptic Assessment.

Unit 6 - Coursework

Analysis and Critical Evaluation of Factors which Optimise Performance and a Synoptic Assignment.
