Oracle Courses

This is an exciting and innovative opportunity for post-16 students who have an interest in developing skills in database and Java programming.

 

Course outline:

Year 1

Unit 1       Database Fundamentals

  • Database development, modelling design and normalisation
  • Sample applications with Oracle Portal
  • Web based project
  • Business skills presentation, case studies

Unit 2       Introduction to SQL

  • SQL Structured Query Language The Language of Data base
  • Select statement; data definition, manipulation and control languages, transaction control
  • Business skills interview and presentation skills

Year 2

Unit 3       Introduction to Java

  • Object-oriented programming
  • Essential concepts of the Java language
  • Java applications
  • Business skills résumé/applications

Unit 4       Java Programming

  • DB applications and applets
  • Integrated Design Environment
  • Business skills portfolio creation

 

Course Delivery:

The four courses each last approximately 90 hours and consist of lectures, hands-on practical sessions, projects and skills training such as collaboration, problem solving and interviewing.

 

The course is offered as an enrichment activity of 3¿ hours per week

              Wednesday afternoon 2.00pm 4.00pm

              1 x 1¿ hour session after school (day to be arranged)

 

Each session will be taught by a fully trained Oracle instructor.

 

Accreditation:

The curriculum is accredited by City & Guilds, and is recognised as equivalent to a Level 3 NVQ.  It is one of a new range of IT qualifications (eQuals) which is eligible for Learning & Skills Council funding.

 

Applications:

Application are invited from students in Y12 and Y13 who show an aptitude in ICT and who have good logical thinking skills.  They should have achieved good grades in GCSE ICTand Mathematics.
