What is AS/A2 Mathematics?

Mathematics is the science of number, quantity and space. AS and A2 are the further development of GCSE concepts to allow problem solving in the real world. It is divided into Pure, Mechanics and Statistics.

How long is the course?

The full Advanced Level qualification is a two year course which consists of the AS + A2 courses.

What qualifications do I need?

5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above including a grade A at Higher Tier in mathematics for Mathematics and A* for Further Mathematics.

What will I study?

You will undertake the following sections of study:

Year 12 Modules (AS)
CORE 1:

Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences + series, differentiation, integration.

CORE 2:

Further development of core 1 topics and trigonomotry, exponentials and logarithms.

STATISTICS 1:

Probability models, representation of data, correlations & regression, discrete random variables, normal distribution.

If following the Further Mathematics course you will complete the A2 mathematics in Yr 12 covering all 6 modules C1-4, M1 and S1.

What else is involved?

• Students need to enjoy the subject
• Students must have a positive attitude and be prepared to work consistently.
• Students need to be aware that mathematics is not an easy option.

How will I be assessed?

• All units are equally weighted at 16²/₃%
• All examination papers are 1 hr 30 min.
• All examination papers are marked out of 75 marks
