Information and Communications Technology

What is AS/A2 Applied Information and Communications Technology?
This course is designed to encourage students to develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of ICT, the components, functions and applications of information systems and the main principles of solving problems using ICT. It also encourages students to apply their knowledge and understanding and develop project management skills and the ability to work with others. The qualification provides students with the essential skills knowledge and understanding of the subject by covering a mixture of units from the theoretical through to those with a clear practical emphasis.

 

What qualifications do I need? 
As well as having the ability to cope with the demands of an Advanced level course pupils should have prior learning and experience of ICT at GCSE level or equivalent, and achieved a grade A-B.

 

What will I study? 
The AS level requires the study of 3 compulsory Units:

 

Unit 1 Using ICT to Communicate

You will use your presentation knowledge and skills to create a portfolio of different communications including a presentation and a report on an investigation.

 

Unit 2 How Organisations use ICT

You will produce a case study on how an organisation collects and uses information and the way it uses ICT to access and exchange information

 

Unit 3 ICT Solutions for Individuals and Society

You will produce a presentation of the results of an investigation using Internet databases and a spreadsheet to analyse numeric data.

 

The A level requires the study of 3 additional

Units, 2 of which can be chosen.

 

How will I be assessed? 
Units 1 and 3 are internally assessed by portfolio evidence. Unit 2 is externally set and marked. The further 3 Units depend on the choice.

There is no written examination paper.

 

What other subjects can I study?
You will be able to combine ICT with any other subject.

 

 

What career and higher education opportunities are open to me?
The qualification allows for a number of progression routes.

 

  • Higher Education:

e.g. Information Technology, Business Systems, Management Information Systems, Multimedia.

  • Employment:

The qualification supports the recognised standards demanded for the subject to meet the requirements of the information and communication technology sectors in the world of work.

  • Related Qualifications:

The units enable students to progress to other related qualifications.
