What is AS/A2 French, German or Italian?
These courses will help you to develop your general study skills but most of all you will learn to communicate at a higher level in the language you have chosen. You will also learn much more about a wide range of aspects of the society or societies in which the language is spoken. If you are interested in languages and communication, and you enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of life, then this course should be suitable for you. Similarly if you are interested in the business world, in travel and tourism, in literature and in journalism and the media, then you are also likely to find the course appropriate. Whether you want to use a language for work, for further study, for training or for leisure, this course will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge.
How long is the course?
The full Advanced Level qualification is a two year course which consists of the AS and A2 courses. It is possible to receive an AS Level qualification after one years study.
What qualifications do I need?
5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above with preferably at least a grade B in the language to be studied

What else is involved?
Students taking an Advanced Level Modern Language will be expected to show a high level of commitment to the subject. They will be expected to
develop their skills outside lesson time by reading magazines, newspapers and books and listening to the radio or satellite TV. Thorough learning of vocabulary and grammar is essential. A visit to the country in question is highly desirable. The Department can help you organise this.

What other subjects can I study?
Business Studies, English, History, Art, another foreign language, are popular combinations, although a language will compliment any subject.
What career and Higher Education opportunities are open to me?
There is a range of opportunities available to linguists: degree courses in languages or an option alongside courses in other subjects. Having AS or A2 in a language will improve your employability in particular with companies which have international branches. Whether you are interested in continuing your studies or working at home or abroad a language course at AS or A2 Level is an excellent step towards achieving your goals.
