Food Technology

What is AS/A2 Food Technology?

This subject covers the whole area of food and food product development.  The course allows pupils to develop a greater understanding of food and its properties.

 

How long is the course?
The full Advanced Level qualification is a two year course which consists of the AS course for one year + the A2 course for a further one year of study.

 

What qualifications do I need?
5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above, including Grade B in GSCE in a Design & Technology subject.

 

What will I study?
You will undertake the following sections of study:

 

Year 12 Modules (AS)
UNIT 1:

Product Development

UNIT 2:

Knowledge and understanding of food materials, products and processing.

 

Year 13 Modules (A2)
UNIT 3:

Further study of food materials, products and processing.

UNIT 4:

Commercial product development (coursework).

 

What else is involved?
Students taking AS and A level food technology will be expected to be well motivated and show a high level of commitment to the subject.  Students will need to work independently carrying out research outside of lesson time.

What other subjects can I study?
Food at AS and A level can be combined with Art, Biology, Chemistry, English and Business Studies.

 

What career and higher education opportunities are open to me?
This is a stimulating course which can lead to further a higher education and employment in catering, Hotel management , commerce and marketing within the food industry.
