What is AS/A2?
Business Studies Business Studies is concerned with a problem solving approach to business issues, helping students to understand the nature and workings of business and industry. Wherever possible we place students in the role of real life decision makers. Much of the teaching is centred around an investigative case study approach as this forms the basis of assessment.
How long is the course?
The full Advanced Level qualification is a two year course which consists of the AS + A2 courses.
What qualifications do I need?
5 or more GCSEs at grade C and above including a grade B in either English or Mathematics.
What will I study?
You will undertake the following sections of study:
Year 12 Modules (AS)
UNIT 1:
Business - Their Objectives and Environment.
This module looks at the external business environment which affects the way in which businesses operate.
UNIT 2 / 3:
Business Decisions.
Both Unit 2 & 3 cover marketing, Accounting & Finance, the organisation of people and the study of operations management
Year 13 Modules (A2)
The A2 modules build upon the content of AS and carries the study of business to a greater depth:
UNIT 4:
Further People in Organisations or Further Marketing.
UNIT 5:
Business Thematic Enquiry or Business Project.
UNIT 6:
Business Strategy.
These units will cover the organisation of business activities, their financing,legal structure and marketing their goods and services. The course will also include how staff are organised, how businesses respond to competition and pressures from society and government etc.
What else is involved?
You should have an enquiring and open mind. You must have the work ethic to develop important skills such as research, analysis, evaluation and problem-solving. You will be encouraged to participate in national business related competitions and activities.

What other subjects can I study?
Most subjects are compatible with Business Studies. It will assist you in areas such as research and note taking and developing analytical skills.
What career and higher education opportunities are open to me?
Business Studies will be of benefit to you whether your intentions are towards Higher Education or a career. There are many general and specialist degree courses providing a comprehensive springboard into many rewarding career areas such as marketing, accountancy, Human Resources Management, etc.
