What is AS/A2 Art & Design?

The main purpose of the course is to develop students ability to appreciate the visual world and to respond in a personal and creative way.

 

How long is the course?

The full Advanced Level qualification is a two year course which consists of the AS + A2 courses.

 

What qualifications do I need?

5 or more GCSEs at grade C and above.  In addition, a grade B in GCSE Art is recommended.

 

What will I study?

You will undertake the following sections of study:

 

Year 12 Modules (AS)

 

UNIT 1:

Art and Design Coursework

 

UNIT 2:

Externally Set Assignment

 

Year 13 Modules (A2)

UNIT 3:

Art and Design Coursework

- Practical Work

- Personal Study

 

UNIT 4:

Externally Set Assignment

 

What else is involved?

Students taking Advanced level Art and Design will be expected to show a high level of independence and self-motivation.  The use of work journals is essential and work undertaken at home is a vital part of the course.

AS LEVEL

2:                        40 (AS) 20 (Advanced)

 

A2 LEVEL

3:                        30 (Advanced)

4:                        20 (Advanced)

 

What other subjects can I study?

Any combination is acceptable.  Entry to art college will be dependent on a successful interview and portfolio of work.

 

What career and higher education opportunities are open to me?
This course is suitable for students:

  • Who wish to study art and design at a higher level usually art college or further education.
  • Who are planning to take up careers for which an art background is relevant.  For example, careers in advertising, publishing, architecture, museum, theatre or art gallery work.
  • With an interest in and aptitude for the subject, but who do not intend to study it further.
