The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington

Religious Studies

In keeping with the overall aims and objectives of the school the Religious Studies Department has a crucial role to play in developing what could be described as a “whole student” approach. Without it, no matter how successful students have been academically, they will be seriously lacking in essential personal qualities such as compassion, consideration for others and appreciation of the views of other people.

In KS3 students are given access to information about the six main world religions in a stimulating way and other beliefs too. This is done by presenting challenges and question in a spirit of discovery. The regular use of ICT facilities enhances this approach. The design of artefacts and display materials complements traditional methods of learning. Examples of this have been the creation of mosaics and collages stimulated by ancient murals found in Lullingstone Roman Villa. Pilgrimages have been planned in details and, in some cases, carried out.

Moral issues are dealt with in KS4 on a regular basis in a non-judgemental manner in a spirit of open debate and forum. The AQA GCSE examination taken by all students, facilitates the assessment of these issues again from a multi-faith point of view and gives credit for well expressed personal opinion.

The annual 6th Form Conference focuses on practical challenges whether they be Human Rights issues of Environmental questions. These have included the simulation of working conditions in Third World countries and practical involvement with the Habitat for Humanity charity. Our students have been challenged to join teams around the world building emergency homes.
