The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington

MFL at GSGW

The Modern Languages department is a thriving and successful department, offering French, German and Italian. All pupils study two languages at KS3 and continue to study at least one language to GCSE level. However, many girls choose to continue with both languages.

All three languages are offered at A level, and, in conjunction with Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, have proved a popular choice in the past.

Pupils engage in a variety of activities in lessons in order to practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. They are given further opportunities to enhance their learning and gain an insight into the culture of the country through subscription to language magazines, a pen friend scheme and regular trips abroad. These include day trips to St Omer and Lille, study tours to Paris, Florence and the Black Forest and sixth form trips to Paris and Berlin.

Our aim is to produce pupils who feel confident conversing in a foreign language and have a greater understanding of cultural diversity and, above all, to promote an enduring enthusiasm for the subject.
