The Mathematics Department
Mathematics affects everything that we do. It forms the basis for many other subjects including, Science, Geography, Business Studies and Design and Technology. It also leads on to numerous fulfilling and enjoyable careers.
KS3.
We run an accelerated scheme of work at KS3 to enable all students to sit the SAT examination at the end of year 8. The students are taught in form groups in year 7 and placed in four sets at the start of year 8. A buddy system is organised for year 7 students who are less confident in mathematics, where the pupil will meet with a sixth form student on a regular basis.
KS4.
Students begin their GCSE course at the start of year 9 and will complete the GCSE by the end of year 10. From September 2006 all year 9 students will be entered for the Higher GCSE modular examinations. They will sit their first module in March of year 9 and then two further modules in November and June of year 10. All students have to complete two pieces of coursework. In year 11 the students are then given the opportunity to broaden their mathematical experience, by completing either an AS module in decision mathematics, a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification or GCSE Statistics.
Enrichment
• Mathematics Competitions.
All students have an opportunity at each key stage to take part in a UKMT mathematics challenge. It is a fun activity involving problem solving.
• Masterclasses.
Year 9 students are invited to attend masterclasses under the auspices of the Royal Institution, covering such topics as group theory, decision mathematics and code breaking. Year 10 students have the opportunity to attend a masterclass at Greenwich University on codes and ciphers based upon the work of Simon Singh.
• Jaguar Mathematics Challenge.
Year 7 pupils take part in the annual Jaguar Mathematics Challenge along with year 6 pupils from some of our feeder primary schools, developing their problem solving skills.
• Free Standing Mathematics Qualification.
Year 12 and 13 students who do not wish to take A-Level mathematics but would like to study the subject in more depth than at GCSE have the opportunity to take a Free Standing Mathematics Qualification as part of their sixth form enrichment programme.
